Blood drive targets young and young-at-heart donors

GASTONIA, July 8, 2003 -- At some point in our lives, more than half of all Americans will need a blood transfusion, but only five percent of the eligible population are blood donors. That means those in need of a blood transfusion are relying on a small percentage of the population for the life-saving donation.

Area high school students in the Gaston County Chapter's youth Explorer Post program intend to help make a difference by educating other local youth on the importance of regular blood donation. The group has organized a special blood drive on Friday, July 11, 11:30 a.m.-4 p.m. targeting local high school students and recent high school graduates who donated blood for the first time at school this past year or have now turned 17 and are eligible donors.

While anyone is welcome to donate at the drive, the group hopes to educate area youth on the importance of regular blood donation and help youth form a "habit" of donating blood as regularly as possible.

"If everyone who donated blood increased the frequency of their blood donation by one time this year, we could meet patient need for blood," said Carey L. Roberts, Gaston County Chapter spokeswoman.

"That's why this drive is so important. So many times youth donate blood once in high school and then head off to college or the workforce and aren't presented with opportunities to donate again or they don't seek out blood donation opportunities," Roberts continued. "Our youth explorers have worked hard to plan this drive to remind other youth of the importance of making time to save a life -- regardless of our age."

The youth plan to offer an assortment of door prizes, Gastonia Grizzlies tickets, food and fun for all who participate in the event. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments can be conveniently scheduled by calling (704) 864-2623.

Eligible blood donors must be at least 17 years of age, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and be in good general health.
